Jim Kysela Bike Commuter

SWAN ISLAND'S COMMUTER OF THE MONTH

JIM KYSELA, Daimler Trucks North America Employee

Jim Kysela, employee of Daimler Trucks North America on Swan Island, has been commuting ten miles each way to and from work for twelve years now. Along the way he discovered some simple but compelling reasons to choose his bike over his car  (other than staying in shape for Cyclecross!). He shares his reasons:

  • No traffic jams in the bike lanes/boulevards
  • Saves gas (helps pay for bike parts/gear!)
  • Helps the planet a little bit
  • Provides a workout while getting to/from work

Jim has streamlined his bike commute ritual:  typically he drives to work at the beginning of the week so that he can bring in clothes for the remainder of the week, retrieve the previous week's clothes, and stop by the co-op to stock up on groceries for the week.

He rides 3-4 days a week nearly year-round (with one exception: when temperatures outside get down to 20 degrees F or lower!).  His bike commute averages five days a week during the summer months and 3 days a week in the harsher winter segments maybe 3x/wk. While he doesn't ride every day ("There's no FUN in being a fundamentalist!"), he proves that biking can be a great option for pragmatists and adventurers alike!
