Bike to Swan Island? Yikes! Can I do it safely?
The answer is YES!
City of Portland bike lanes on Interstate Avenue, Denver Avenue,
Willamette Boulevard and Greeley Avenue will get you to Swan
Island’s main drag, Going Street. Contact
the Swan Island TMA for several “off map” bike routes to Swan
Island (503-745-6563,
sitma@teleport.com).
On Going Street and the Swan Island roadway network, the Swan
Island TMA recommends use of the sidewalk. This is legal and at
least during peak hours with trucks and anxious commuters, the
safest place to be. But be sure to watch for pedestrians and vehicles
turning in and out of driveways.
"Going to the River"
The Going Street sidewalk ("Going to the River") provides
bike/walk access to Swan Island. For most of the way
it is separated from traffic by trees; its 8' width will soon be
widened to 10' on the Going Street bridge. It links
to sidewalks and crossings at Basin Avenue (now relocated 100'
to the north) & Wygant, the Greeley ramp to Going Street and
signalized crossing at Going and Port Center Way.
These improvements were funded by the City of
Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services’ Westside CSO
project.
Remember, bikes are permitted on TriMet buses and MAX trains. No
permit required!

Do people actually WALK on Swan Island?
YES and some walk to it as well!
Swan Island has a great section of the North Willamette Greenway
Trail; with the opening of the Swan Island Pump Station segment
the Trail is now over one
mile of landscaped, paved walkway along the working Willamette.
It is the only access to the River between St Johns and the
Steel Bridge! Its got ships, wildlife and a sunny southern
exposure! To learn more go to: www.npGreenway.org
Signalized crosswalks are provided at Basin & Anchor, Lagoon &
Anchor, Channel & Anchor and Going and Port Center Way.
Further north on Basin, signalized crossings are at Emerson and Leverman. Though the sidewalk network has gaps, access is
possible to almost the entire industrial area on foot.
New sidewalks have been recently added along Anchor and Basin as
well as Channel Avenue.
Go to "Projects" to learn about the Waud Bluff
Trail, that will connect Swan Island to the University Park
neighborhood and all of North Portland and about the just opened
section of the River to Lagoon segment of the Willamette
Greenway Trail.
